Rutter’s Expands Transparent Initiative with Locally-Grown Produce

Rutter’s is pleased to announce that it is expanding their Fresh & Local initiatives by adding seasonal fruits and vegetables to Grab & Go cold cases and fresh, restaurant menu offerings!

Yesterday, we began offering customers a fresh assortment of watermelon, blueberries, heirloom cherry tomatoes, sweet corn and yellow and green squash in the Grab & Go case located in the center of the store.  The watermelon, blueberries and tomatoes are sold in ready to eat packaging, perfect for a quick, healthy snack.  The sweet corn and squash are fresh packed whole and offers you the added convenience of selecting a fresh side for home cooked meals when they stop at Rutter’s on their way home from work.

New Fresh & Local ingredients being used in our on-site restaurants are currently sliced and chopped sweet onions, sliced green peppers, and mushrooms, all being grown in Pennsylvania.  As the growing season’s change, so will our fresh selection of ingredients.  Just look for the ‘Local’ icon on the build-your-own kiosks!  Family farms throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia are providing the Grab & Go and restaurant menu produce. “Rutter’s has an agricultural, dairy, and food service history spanning several hundred years in the Central PA community and with our fresh and local focus, we are supporting businesses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region while offering our customers healthy, economically sustainable products,” said Ryan Krebs, Rutter’s Director of Food Service.  “Rutter’s operating footprint is one of the most agriculturally rich states in the country, so it’s rewarding to fulfill my commitment to offering restaurant quality, fresh food in our convenience stores by partnering with local farmers and food producers.”

We began our Fresh & Local initiative several years ago and recently hired a sourcing expert dedicated to expanding our local sourcing partners, defining local as a product or manufacturer located in the state of Pennsylvania or within 100 miles of the corporate office in York, PA.  We now works with over 55 local brands including Spring Glen Fresh FoodsKunzler & Co. and Wintergarden Quality Foods plus 12 Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia produce farms for both retail packaged products and ingredients for freshly made restaurant items.  As the fresh produce season’s progress, so will the offerings and farm suppliers.
